Breaking backboards, rim ripping dunks doesn’t happen anymore in the NBA. Although there are many videos on YouTube of backboards breaking because of powerful dunks, this is actually very rare. Most of the time it is from old high school gyms, where they have older set of backboards and basketball rims.
Backboards are much stronger and better reinforced than they were in the past. Shaquille OβNeal was by far the strongest player in the NBA, and as a result broke many backboards over his lifetime. In fact, Shaq broke so many backboards that he had a monument installed in his backyard to commemorate all the backboards he broke.
